Is the rag1 gene a suitable marker for assessing biogeographic trends in species of the catfish family Pangasiidae in the Lower Mekong River?

Thesis Advisor: Michael Ceballos

Completing an honors thesis was one of the most challenging experiences I’ve ever had, but in the end, it was all worth it. I defended my thesis in April 2020. I used genetic markers to elucidate biogeographic trends in several species of catfish. I chose my lab because I liked the professor and generally the types of research he did. Choosing a specific project was not only about enjoying the subject, but also about how I got along with the project lead (often a master’s or PhD student) and the other students assigned to the project. The worst part was getting started! It can be overwhelming, but there’s tons of support available within the Honors College and within the hierarchical structure of most labs. The defense can seem daunting, but from my experience, the professors on your committee do not want to tear you down – they want you to succeed. My advice: keep your eye on the prize!

“All things are difficult before they are easy.”

This quote has given me constant motivation throughout my college career. It reminds me to push through every challenge and focus on the big picture. The stress or pressure you may feel is only temporary, but the knowledge and skills you will gain are long-lasting!
