There’s always room for your passions in the world of research. Even if you think your topics and passions are not research worthy, controversial, or out of the ordinary, go for it anyway. You never know who is going to pick up your project and find it important and worthy of being read.

Undergrad goes by a lot faster than you’d think! Take this time to challenge yourself, get out of your comfort zone, and allow yourself room to grow! Don’t fear change or challenges. When I was a freshmen I was sure I would study biology and go to med school, but after a difficult first semester I made the decision to change course. I love history so I chose to study history and I couldn’t be happier with this decision. Be flexible! You never know what may capture your interest. Don’t write off a field of study or career path because it wasn’t your initial plan.

Your time as an undergraduate offers you the unbridled opportunity for you to discover what you love. My advice is to my fellow honors students is to never let a chance pass you by. Take every class, read every book, attend every lecture, and go on every study abroad trip that you can. Even when you’re exhausted, even when you have so much work to do, even when you’re burnt out. Push yourself past that and do it, because in the moment that you’re doing it, those worries will fade away – and you might just find yourself in the midst of an experience you never would have been in otherwise, realizing just what it is that you love.

“Some men say an army of horse and some men say an army on foot

and some men say an army of ships is the most beautiful thing

on the black earth. But I say it is

_____What you love.” -Sappho, Fragment 16, Hymn to Aphrodite III, trans. Anne Carson

Coming to the University of Arkansas from a small school, I was definitely nervous that I wasn’t prepared for the academic challenges of college. Fortunately, Fulbright Honors and the U of A supported me every step of the way, encouraging academic greatness and affirming my talents when I thought I had little to offer. For anyone else who may feel the same insecurities, please know that you are right where you need to be. Take your time, and be open to growth.
