Always say yes to the opportunities provided through the Honors College! Because of the Honors College, I have traveled around the world, hunted ghosts, and befriended the most craziest and brilliant people. My college experience has been full of mirth and laughter! My advice is to always be yourself and always be open to others being themselves. The ability to connect and develope empathy with others is the most important tool.

Among Beasts

Thesis Advisor: Geffrey Davis

Take honors courses outside of your comfort zone. Not only are you fulfilling your Fulbright Honors requirements, but you are also challenging yourself to know more about unfamiliar subjects that can aid you in later research, work, etc.

My thesis, “Among Beasts,” consisted of thirty pages of original poetry. It was a valuable exploration of myself, family, and community. The work in my thesis continues to evolve, as I included many of the poems in my graduate school writing samples and will continue to work on them in the University of Arkansas’s Program in Creative Writing and Translation this fall. With my experience in mind, my advice to students, especially those in creative fields such as the fine arts, is to view the process as an opportunity to evolve in your artistry and creative development. Have fun with your thesis! Like me, you may use your thesis in the future: in your career, graduate school applications, etc. View this process as fun and exciting– this is a beginning of a successful future! Your thesis is a celebration of all you have achieved now and will accomplish in the future.

The Honors College was the greatest decision of my academic career, but it’s not for the faint of heart. If you make it through (and you absolutely can), you will come out better than you could have ever imagined. I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I came into the University of Arkansas, but through the mentorship and guidance I found through students, professors, and staff in the Honors College, I am more confident in my future than ever. I will be forever grateful for my time here.
