So you’ve chosen and applied for a study abroad program, and learned of your acceptance. You are probably feeling a mix of emotions—excitement, relief, and perhaps some anxiety. Studying abroad can be daunting, no matter if you are a frequent traveler or you are leaving the country for the first time. I have studied abroad in Greece and in Japan, and will be venturing abroad for more learning this summer in Ireland. All of my study abroad experiences have been faculty-led courses with the University of Arkansas. I studied classics for a month in Greece, and had the chance to travel all over the country to learn about various aspects of ancient and modern Greek culture and history. In Japan, I traveled around the country for two weeks learning about traditional architecture and landscape gardens. Finally, my experience in Ireland for two weeks this coming summer will focus on intercultural communication and Irish culture. With this experience under my belt, I have compiled my best tips for how to make the most of your time abroad.
Research your destination before you go
Every country has its own unique culture, customs, and climate, and a smart traveler is an informed traveler. I have found that the U.S. State Department’s website is a helpful starting point for learning about country information and travel tips. Additionally, Pinterest is always filled with several articles about any given country, from social etiquette to packing tips. Find out what the weather will be like there to ensure you pack accordingly, and make sure to know about any social do’s and don’ts so that you can be a respectful and aware visitor to the country. I suggest learning a bit of the language as well—even if it is a country with English signage and menus to accommodate tourists, I have found that locals really appreciate any attempts at their own language.
Get organized before you go
Take the time to plan out exactly how much clothing you will need, and make sure to pack essentials like a rain jacket, something to jot down your thoughts with, and comfortable shoes. When I traveled to Greece, I remember forgetting to pack enough socks, and hurrying to the local pharmacy to purchase more. Thinking through every detail while packing will make your time abroad much smoother. Take the time to double check all of your paperwork such as health insurance, flight itinerary, and passport. This will help ease any worries and make traveling much more pleasant.
Be ready to try new things
This may seem like a given, but it can be tempting when you are in a new country to immediately seek the familiar. Don’t order a cheeseburger at your first meal abroad—seek out something you wouldn’t get to try otherwise. Take part in any excursions your program offers. Explore your new surroundings and interact with new people. Some of your best memories and learning experiences can be gained by going outside of your comfort zone. When I was in Greece, I made an effort to try a new food dish at each restaurant that I visited. As a picky eater, this was very outside of my comfort zone, but it was so worth it because I discovered so many new foods that I love to this day! Seeking out new foods, people, and places is easily one of the best parts of any study abroad experience. I promise you will not regret it.
Keep an open mind
You have two ears for listening and only one mouth, so take this opportunity to listen and soak up the atmosphere twice as much as you normally would. You will meet all kinds of new people, see many new places, and be introduced to a totally different culture. But, I have found every time I have been abroad that keeping an open mind has helped me see not only differences while abroad, but many similarities. While in Japan, I had the opportunity to immerse in a non-Western culture for the very first time. What I found despite several differences is that the people of Japan were so kind and very fun to talk to, while also giving me new perspectives on government, interpersonal relations, and culture. Experiencing humanity in this way and gaining new perspectives is incredibly rewarding.
This list is not exhaustive in any way-there are so many ways to enjoy and get the most out of studying abroad. For more information on studying abroad, please visit the Office of Study Abroad and International Exchange’s website at studyabroad.uark.edu. Enjoy your travels!
